São João Baptista Cemetery calls for cleaning and more attention
City of Nova Sintra, September 22, 2024 (Bravanews) - The situation of the cemetery in the parish of Sao Joao Baptista, Brava Island, located in Lem, has raised concerns among the local population. Recently, residents and family members of deceased loved ones have mobilized to demand improvements to the space, which is in a state of abandonment and degradation. The cemetery walls show signs of wear and tear and the vegetation, which should be taken care of, is out of control, covering graves and making access difficult.
The lack of cleaning and maintenance not only compromises the aesthetics of the place, but also disrespects the memory of those who rest there. Many people express indignation at seeing the cemetery, which should be a space for reflection and reverence, turning into a scene of neglect. “It is disrespectful to our loved ones. They deserve a dignified place,” complained a resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, but who frequently visits the cemetery to pay her respects.
The complaints are unanimous among visitors. In addition to cleaning, there is a growing demand for repairs to the structures, such as the walls that are in poor condition, putting the safety of visitors and the integrity of the graves at risk. “Local authorities urgently need to take action. A cemetery in poor condition is a reflection of how we treat our dead and, consequently, how we view ourselves as a society,” said a member of the community.
According to municipal legislation, the management of cemeteries is the sole responsibility of the City Council. Community groups have begun organizing awareness campaigns, seeking not only improvements to the cemetery but also dialogue with the local administration. “We want to create a space that reflects the love and respect we have for our loved ones. It’s a joint effort,” said one of the organizers.
In addition to community actions, the population is calling for a commitment from the authorities to allocate specific resources for the maintenance of the cemetery. “I believe that a small part of the municipal budget could be directed to ensuring that this sacred place has the dignity it deserves,” suggested one resident.
The call for changes to the Nova Sintra cemetery is a call to action so that the memory of those who have passed away is not forgotten. At a time when the island is facing many difficulties, the community’s unity around this cause demonstrates the strength of solidarity and the importance of respect for those who are no longer with us. In the meantime, visitors continue to call for improvements, eagerly awaiting a future where the Sao Joao Baptista cemetery can be a true place of peace and homage.
